Smarter, richer people use Google - study

If you're smart and rich, there's a good chance you use Google. A study released this month by online advertising company Chitikafound that people who use Google's search engine tend to live in states with above-average median household incomes and college graduation rates. States where people Google ( GOOG , Fortune 500 )a lot also tend to be those that have older populations and higher job growth rates. Using data collected from Internet users across the country, the ad company found that residents of Utah, California and Massachusetts Google the most. People in Mississippi, Arkansas and West Virginia Google the least. A spokesman from Google declined to comment for this story. Bradley Strauss, Chitika's data scientist and lead author of the study, is quick to point out that the statistics provide only descriptive results. The study never sought out to explain why the correlation occurs, or how these variables impact or are affected by Google use. Related story: Larry Ellison says Apple's best days are behind it "When we spur job growth does it spur Google usage?" asked Andrew Waber, a Chitika spokesman, "We can't prove causation, but we can make the case it correlates." To be sure, Google is popular everywhere: The population of all50 states uses Google at least 50% of the time when searching the Web. But analyzing the numbers on a state level could help advertisers better target their audiences, Strauss explained. Google controls a 67% share of the U.S. search market, accordingto data tracker comScore ( SCOR ), so advertising companies tend to post ads on search giant. But if advertisers are targeting lower-income or younger audiences, the Chitika study suggests that it is worth considering Google alternatives.

The Nigerian Artist who used his JAMB's form money to record his first song

He was there at the very beginning when the Afro hip hop revolution began after fighting against the odds despite criticism from the record labels of the day. However, in 1999, luck finally smiled on him when he got his first record deal with Kennis Music which transformed his life forever after using money meant for procuring his JAMB forms to record his first demo.
The artiste known as Rasqui ( Rasaq Lawal) would go on to release his hit single, Ati Ready and remain one of the most popular faces of the Afro hip hop revolution.
In this interview with The Entertainer, the singer opens up on how he found music at an early age, his challenges, and the role Kennis Music played in making him a force to reckon with in music.
Excerpts:
How did you come into music?
I didn’t go to any school of music neither was I attached to any musician for tutelage. As I grew up I discovered that I was singing songs that I had never heard before. The songs just kept flowing so I decided to start keeping a music diary where I wrote down all my songs.
As the days rolled by, the songs kept coming and I kept on writing. At a stage I started gathering my friends together and entertaining them. It was at such get-togethers that I was encouraged to talk to leading record labels of that time. Those were the days of Sony Music, Afrodisia, Decca and other local labels. Prompted by my friends, I stepped out knocking on their doors.
What were the setbacks you encountered?
As a youth, I was full of enthusiasm in the new life that awaited me as a successful artiste. I would dress in my best clothes, polish my shoes to the point where they reflected sunlight because I believed that the sunshine of my life was around the corner in the form of a juicy deal from a giant recording company. I was not only disappointed by the companies, many of them threw me out!
You mean they threw you out?
Yes.  There was this very embarrassing experience I had. I tried explaning to an A&R man at a big label back then. I said I was a hip hop artiste and tried to explain my music to him. All I said only brought out scornful laughter from him. He looked me in the face and said, ‘go and sing fuji, juju or gospel music. We don’t have time to waste on rubbish. We can’t spend our resources on the kind of nonsense you have brought here. Please, excuse me I’m busy.’
I came back home disappointed because of the thorough tongue lashing I received. Yet I refused to give up! I wasn’t going to sing fuji, juju or gospel music. I got the inspiration for those songs from above and I believed God had prepared someone out there who would take them out to the market place. As the songs continued to come, the zeal to get a record deal overwhelmed me.
How did you meet Kenny Ogungbe?
My meeting with Uncle Kenny Ogungbe of Kennis Music was dramatic! The effect of that moment turned my life around forever. It was Kennis Music that transformed the music landscape in Nigeria; there’s no controversy about that.
The duo of Kenny Ogungbe and Dayo Adeneye were and are still a blessing to the music industry in Nigeria. When I submitted my demo tape to them, they embraced the product. I was so glad when I was signed on and they released the album. That move shot me to limelight and changed my life forever. I was with Kennis Music from 1999 till I left the label six years later.
Tell us about your experience at Kennis Music?
Kennis Music had the foresight to know where music was going internationally. While the old label owners were busy nursing old and dying ideals, Kennis Music was busy looking into the future of music and how to transform Nigerian music and key it into global trends. Today that has happened.
Nigerian hip hop is played on radio stations worldwide. It has won numerous international awards. Kudos to Uncle Kenny Ogungbe and D1 (Dayo Adeneye). Nigeria is a great country full of talented and resourceful people but government has no vision for the industry. I remember that I used the money given to me to procure Joint Admission and Matriculation Boards (JAMB) forms to record the demo tape I submitted to Kennis Music; I was  determined not to fail.
Who are your mentors in music?
I am one of the few artistes who lack mentors. During my days, the reigning sound was fuji, Juju, and gospel music. That was in the 1990s when nobody thought of hip hop as anything to write home about. Apart from my friends who were encouraging me to push on, nobody else surfaced. Hip hop was seen as an American thing which should not be encouraged.
Tell us about your first time on air?
It was in October 1999. I can’t remember the actual date now. It was on the spot decision that led me to a radio station that day. I took the track Ati Ready (We Are Ready) to Star FM at Alausa, Ikeja. I asked to see one of the disc jockeys. I was led to one Kwame as he was called. I introduced myself and why I came. He collected the CD from me saying if it’s not good, he won’t play it on air. I said okay. He put the CD inside the player and wore his headphone. Initially he was nodding his head along with the beat, at a stage, he removed the headphone and started talking to another person. I was perplexed! I called his attention to the CD in the player. He looked at me and said ‘what? I’ve started playing your music on air already.’ I was so happy I was speechless! That was the beginning of the massive radio attention the song received.
What would you say has been the impact of hip hop music in Nigeria?
Hip hop has had a very great impact on the youths of nowadays. It is simply addictive. However, if lyrics could be modified to reflect more of the positives, the better it would be for the youths and the nation in general. This is where the job of the Nigerian Broadcasting Corporation (NBC) comes to play. NBC should monitor what is put on air, sanction and ban records like they do to film in order to sanitise society. I look forward to that.
What is the future of hip hop?
The future is bright. It is a growing genre. It is still in its infancy in Nigeria, worldwide attention and acceptance notwithstanding. It is going to expand and bring forth other forms of music. Music forms like fuji, juju, gospel, apala, sakara and even real traditional local forms would soon be uplifted by the introduction of hip hop into them.
What is your opinion on piracy?
It is bad, too bad. Every attempt to curtail it has always been violently countered by the pirates. Apart from shows and concerts, no artiste can fully realize money worthwhile from sales. Our albums are sold everywhere but the profits go to the pirates and not artistes. We need a special task force organized by government to enforce sanity among our marketers who most often double as pirates.
How do you handle female fans?
When people accept you and your music you’ll know. Fans will always be there to welcome you to shows and concerts. Carefulness is the watchword. You must not overdo anything with them especially the females. When you see them throwing pants, brassiers and handkerchiefs at you on stage, see it as just an expression of their love for you. It shouldn’t be the key for you to ask them to open their private parts for you, you’ll lose their support. Once you are accepted by female fans, the males will follow. To abuse them (females) is to lose them. Females are our greatest fans.
How do you get inspiration to write your songs?
I write my songs myself. I get inspiration from what I see, think about and experience  in my environment. All these combine to produce lyrics for me. Sometimes if I listen to other songs, I get inspired to write a new one or a version of the one I listened to.
What’s your academic qualification?
Because I used the money I was supposed to use to buy my JAMB forms to record my first demo cassette, I lost the opportunity of going to the university.
However, I attended Yaba College of Technology where I read Business Management. I left there in 2004 with my Higher National Diploma (HND).
How do you relax?
I watch movies. For food, I like black amala with ewedu. I don’t take alcohol as a rule. I only drink water and juice.

23 Years Old Woman with triplet begs in market as Husband abandons her

Traders and visitors to the Eke Awka market were astonished recently when a young girl displayed her new born triplet in front of the market under the sun and was soliciting alms.
According to The Sun News, the young girl, who gave her name as Blessing Osunbor and aged 23, said she came to sAwka from Onitsha where she and her babies have stayed for some weeks after their arrival from her hometown, Oron in Cross River State.
It was like an offering time in the church as people walk to the spot and dropped money in the plate she kept there with sympathy as they watched the triplet lying on the mat spread on the cover of drains.
According to the 23-year-old Blessing, when she pitched her tent with one Okon whom she does not even know his surname in Oron Cross River State, she thought a bright future had started.
And without caution she assumed the position of a wife without the knowledge or consent of her parents and consequently became pregnant. Okon, she said, pretended to have loved her as he acted a good husband until the day she was delivered of her babies.
After Blessing put to bed triplets, by the time babies and mum returned to Okon’s house, he was allegedly said to have taken to his heels after some days and never returned. Blessing who said she hails from Oron Calabar told Daily Sun that when she could not see Okon she has to carry the triplet, two girls and a boy, out on the streets to solicit help from public-spirited people.
Hear her story: Me and Okon I was in a relationship with Okon, the man who impregnated me. I was living with him in the house he rented. My mum does not know him as she is old and in the village while I was staying in Oron town.
I delivered my babies at the Apostolic Church Oron and when I returned to the house, but few days after my return Okon ran away from the house and his phone does not go any longer.
Why I went into begging with the triplets
My triplet, two girls and a boy are about two months and because we have no one to assist us, I have to leave Oron to Aba and from there to Onitsha from where I came to Awka. I used to sleep in the market with my children in that market in Onitsha before I started this business of bringing them out to seek for people patronage.
Going to government or churches for help
Asked if she has sought assistance from the government or churches, she said she was advised to go to Rev. Fr. Ejike Mbaka in Enugu, and would go their when it is convenient for her. “They advised me to go to Mbaka, and they said it is in the night, but I cannot take these children out in the night.”
Okon’s whereabouts
On the whereabouts of Okon, she said: “I don’t know his phone number, the number he used to use does not go again; he must have changed it so that we can’t reach him.” She, however, said that if Okon returns to take care of them, she would accept him back, adding “If he comes back and said he wants to accept his responsibilities, that he has what he will use to take care of us, me and the kids, matter don finish be that.” Blessing also pleaded with people to assist her at least for the sake of the triplet.

“I think, if there is any person who did not have any problem, it was my father. He just got on with life; he did not recriminate. In every position he found himself, good, comfortable, difficult, painful, he just got on. I learnt many things from him.
“ I hope I can be as rounded in integrity as he was. He was humble in his attitude to life, humble in life. He died in the month of Ramadan, he died in the Night of Majesty,” Fashola said.

A Person Killed by a Drunk Policeman in Lagos

One person was killed on Monday night by a drunk police man. According to Daily Sun, three gun-shot victims rushed to the Accident and Emergency Ward of the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH), Idi-Araba, on Monday night are in stable condition, while the fourth person died on arrival, Daily Sun learnt yesteray.
The victims, three men and a pregnant woman, were allegedly shot by one Corporal Mohammed Abubakar from MOPOL 17, Akure, Ondo State at Diamond Estate, Festac Town, following a disagreement over an unconfirmed matter. It was gathered that the four victims were allegedly shot in a fast food joint by the corporal who was suspected to be drunk at the time of the incident.
Eyewitnesses said the disagreement and flaring-up of tempers occurred that night at the fast food joint where noodles is the main delicacy. The angry corporal opened fire on the victims and fled.  The policeman who is not attached to the Lagos Police Command, was said to be on an unofficial visit to a company in Diamond Estate.
Meanwhile, when our reporter visited LUTH, the three surviving victims were being attended to by doctors who assured  that they will make it. The consultants regretted the death of one of the victims, blaming his demise on the site of the bullet wound and the time of arrival of the patients to the hospital.
A consultant, who spoke to Daily Sun on condition of anonymity, disclosed that of the three surviving patients, the two men will go for surgery because of the nature of wounds they sustained from the gunshot and also to retrieve bullets and pellets from their bodies.
“The pregnant woman who appears to be a bit more lucky, will not need surgery, she will undergo intensive and general care and be discharged. One of the men was shot in the eye, ophatalmologists are working hard to ensure the wound does not degenerate, he will be operated soon.
“The second man was shot in the thigh, he will also undergo surgery, apart from the damage done on the site of the wound, there are indications that bullet pellets lodged in the muscles must be retrieved,” he said.
Confirming the incident, LUTH’s spokesperson, Mrs Hope Nwawolo, said the three victims are in stable condition and are responding to treatment. “The hospital has drafted a team of experts to ensure that they are well taken care of medically”, she said.
The state Commissioner of Police (CP), Mr Umar Manko, confirmed that a police corporal from MOPOL 17, Akure, Ondo State was responsible for the shooting. “The corporal is not from the Lagos State Police Command. He is from MOPOL 17, Akure. He was attached to a company in Festac Town, but I wonder what a mobile policeman from Akure is doing in Lagos.
The CP said he has asked the Area Commander for Festac area, Mr Dan Okoro, to contact his Squadron Commander to explain what the policeman from his unit was doing in that company at that time. Manko disclosed the force has declared manhunt for the corporal who took to his heels after committing the crime.
Another eyewitness said that the corporal went to the fast food vendor to eat noddles when a quarrel broke out between him and other customers. The source said in the process, he fired sporadically and took to his heels. “The policeman would have been lynched by a mob, but they were afraid to go after him as he was fully armed,” the eyewitness said.
